WHY PRIMARY EDUCATION SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF YOUR LIST WHEN YOU WANT TO DONATE TO A CHARITY

Why primary education” should be at the top of your list when you want to donate to a charity. School brings back a lot of bittersweet memories for many of you. The routine would get cumbersome sometimes, or boring and uninteresting. Yet, you used to wake up, trudge along to school, have the time of your lives, and return after an eventful day.

Chatting excitedly with your mother about what magic you learned, your friends, sharing lunch, and that occasional scolding from your teachers; even though you didn’t realize it then, it was all fundamental in nurturing your mind and body. It played a vital role in determining who you’ve blossomed into today.

Can you imagine school not being a part of your life? Quite a few times, you wish you could go back to those days right? You yearn to relive those cherished moments, reminiscing about childhood when you spent half of your time in school.

The sad reality is that there are still a lot of children who do not have the opportunity to attend school. Many neither have access to primary education nor the privilege to train for better lives. They are being disadvantaged from having a wonderful, memorable childhood.

Here are a few mind-numbing statistics that drive the point home:

  • About 258 million children and youth were out of school in 2018 — nearly one fifth of the global population in that age group.
  • 6 out of 10 children and adolescents are not achieving a minimum level of proficiency in reading and math

Some facts and figures also suggest geographical and gender disparity in attaining primary education:

More than half of children that have not enrolled in school live in sub-Saharan Africa, and more than 85 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa are not learning the minimum.

Isn’t that shocking? Hard to digest? It is for us as well!

Let’s explain a few basics and work our way upwards.

What is Education?

According to the definition given in Merriam Webster dictionary, Education is:

a: the action or process of educating or of being educated

b: the knowledge and development resulting from the process of being educated.

This can be roughly translated into, education is something that is essential for the overall development of a person.

Why is it considered necessary to be educated?

*It lays the foundation for a person’s success and gives him a sense of reliability, helps him realize his true potential, and boosts his confidence.

*It paves the way for different opportunities and enables the child to explore and define a career.

*It influences the socioeconomic development of an individual positively. A person with a basic education will be able to employ his knowledge to increase respect and social status immensely.

The economic benefits come into place when he can use this as an instrument to establish his credibility and authority. In almost any work prospect, education is a benchmark in selecting a candidate.

*It helps to eliminate poverty from an individual’s life. Armed with the weapon of sound lessons, a person can use it to their benefit.

*Solid education is crucial to empowering a person to grow, stimulating curious minds, ensuring independence, improving cognition, cultivating erudite individuals, and refining various skills! It produces a well-rounded individual who possesses a sense of liberation and freedom to follow the desired path.

The best environments which encourage learning are schools.

Walls plastered from top to bottom with posters of the ABCs, numbers from 1 to 100, and the colours of the rainbow invite children to a classroom.

Sitting in a class with peers from the same age group is vital in nurturing a child’s zeal to learning, sharing, leadership building, and understanding the values of mutual respect.

Schools are the building blocks that contribute to a child’s mental, physical, and social development.

The United Nations considers Quality Education as a fundamental right and categorized it as the 4th sustainable development goal. It states that:

“By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes.”

The major aim is to provide free, quality education to all children. Do not deny the right to primary education to children, irrespective of their sex, caste and creed.

What we strive for at ‘HSDF(Helpers Social Development Foundation)’

One of our keys focuses at HSDF is on providing Primary Education to underprivileged children in Nigeria. We do not want to deny this right to any child who is deprived of education just because he/she cannot afford one.

One of our projects is the Back To School initiative which is aimed at encouraging less privileged children to return to schools and receive primary education.

The major barrier that hinders them from learning is finance. Hence we have a constant requirement of finance to maintain a sound infrastructure and provide students with the necessary facilities for an enjoyable experience at school.

Another goal of ours is to bring little girls back to school and bridge the glaring gender gap that exists. We need to tackle quite a few skeletons in the closet and we are taking it one step at a time.

We would also love donations in kinds like books, shoes, school supplies and toys. Our mission is to provide the opportunity to learn to all those kids who would otherwise miss out on a chance to possess a powerful tool.

We have earnest volunteers for teaching the basics to students and it has shown phenomenal results but we are always in need of more.

Those passionate philanthropists travelling to Nigeria can also spend some time with our children and enjoy the first-hand experience as a volunteer tutor! We also want to develop a pragmatic approach towards our vision and have a lot of ideas brewing.

There is a lot of kindness in the world and we know that our goal of delivering primary education resonates well with your vibe.
