WAYS TO PREVENT GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Violence against women is also known as gender-based violence and sexual and gender abuse violence.
This is a crime committed primarily or exclusively by violence. Such violence against women is a form of
the crime made to humiliate women or young girls who they thought can’t fight for themselves or
having anyone fighting for them even if they speak up, is more like marginalization to this particular
gender. Statistically, it is proven that about 100,000 murders have been committed against women from
2018-2019, violence against women has a very long-lasting history through the incidents and
the intensity of such violence has varied over time and till today, it varies between societies, such violence
is often seen as a mechanism for the subjugation of women either in society, in general, or in an
interpersonal relationship. This kind of violence may arise from a sense of entitlement, superiority or
similar attitudes toward the perpetrator or his violent nature, especially against women.

 

The declaration on the elimination of violence against women states that violence against women is a
manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women and violence against
women are one of the crucial social mechanisms by which women are forced into subdued position
compared with violence against women and girls is a problem of pandemic proportions. A least one out
of three women in the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime
with the abuser usually, someone you know.

 

EFFECT OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ON THE SOCIETY

The issue of violence against women still remains one of the most pervasive forms of human rights
violations worldwide. Violence against women can occur in both public and private areas of life and
at any time of their life span. Violence against women often prevents them not to contribute to the social,
economic and political development of their communities. So many women are terrified by these
threats of violence and this essentially influences their lives that they are impeded to exercise their
human rights.

 

Apart from that, the causes that trigger violence against women or gender-based violence can go
beyond just the issues of age, class, culture, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and special
geographical area of their origin. Gender violence can also extend into the realm of health issues and
become a direct concern of the public sector.
According to (WHO) the World Health Organization report shows that violence against women puts an
undue burden on health services and at a higher cost compared to women who have not suffered
violence. Violence against women in terms of domestic violence such as close fists, kicking and strangling
can lead to the death of the victim or can even cause lifetime damage. Studies show that one of the best
findings of inter and intra-national violence is the maltreatment of women in society.

Domestic violence is violence or any abuse a person experiences at home, such as marriage or
cohabitation. Domestic violence is commonly described as a term used by the infidel partner to describe the violent behaviour of the person relating to his/her relationship with him/her. Domestic violence also
includes violence against children and parents, as well as older adults. It could take several forms such as
physical, verbal, emotional, financial, religious, prostitution or sexual abuse.

 

CAUSES OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Causes of gender-based violence are poverty, domestic discrimination, cultural laws, norms, physical
security.

CONSEQUENCES OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Gender-based violence leads to suicide and homicide, disability and sleeping disorder, injury, shock,
reproduction problems, the social, and economic problems such as an increase in gender inequalities
THINGS THAT SHOULD BE DONE EITHER BY THE GOVERNMENT OR BY THE COMMUNITIES TO END GBV
– Government should create platforms or program centres that will help women that have been
through gender-based violence and counselling programs should be organized.
– They should provide funds that will help victims get rehabilitated.
– Government should invest in executive and judiciary arms of government so that the victims are
assisted
– They should be community social structures such as community men and women groups through
which sensitization programs will be performed, where people share experiences and remedies
related to gender-based violence in order to solicit support from fellow community members.
