Helpers Social Development Foundation builds sanitary facilities in Primary schools for Uwani River Primary School, Enugu.
While handing over the keys to the facility to the school management, the Chairman and co-founder of the foundation, Mr Chidi Okeke said that the project was done as part of its effort to ensure that pupils in the state learn in the best atmosphere. We are happy to end 15 years of open defecation at Uwani primary school through Helpers Social Development Foundation humanitarian efforts.
How can toilets promote education?
“That is why we are doing what we are doing today. We have been on several outreaches and we plan to build more sanitary facilities in public schools in Nigeria. We want to build 50 toilets facilities within the next five years. But we cannot do it alone. We are running this project alone so we need assistance.
“We have also been going to other schools distributing books and other educational materials to primary and secondary schools across Nigeria states. Our vision is to ensure that no child is out of school because of lack of finances.”
Why is WASH important in schools?
The headmistress of the school, Theresa Umahi, thanked the foundation for providing the facility which she said will help both students and pupils within the school. She however pleaded for more facilities in the school.
“The most important one now is that we need running water. It is my passionate appeal to the people, the community, and the PTA to come to our aid. This NGO is wonderful, the other time they donated exercise books for the pupils. They are really working.”
Donate for charity
On her part, Education Secretary, Enugu South LGA Mrs Constance Okorie who represented the Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Area, described the donation as a noble act which will go a long way in enhancing the conformability and academic performance of the pupils.
