Young People Forum: Strategies To Prevent Sexual Abuse

Young People Forum: Strategies To Prevent Sexual Abuse.  On 15th July 2020, the Medical and Missions Archdeaconry of Awgu Aninri Diocese, Enugu State Nigeria and Helpers Social Development Foundation co-host a programme captioned “The Young People Forum”. The programme was held at Church of Divine Compassion Ituku/Ozalla.

 

Helpers Social Development Foundation was invited to present our organization programmes to the young people in the event. Helpers social development foundation theme for the programme include:

  1. Strategies to prevent sexual abuse

  2. Personal growth and development.

 

Helpers social development foundation believes that young people are our most valuable resource, therefore we need to guide them well. These made us honour the invitation and unleash the strategies needful to guide the young people not to become a victim of sexual abuse during and after the covid-19 pandemic. Again, the situation of the world today as a result of the Covid-19  pandemic have affected young people physically, mentally and psychologically.

Strategies To Prevent Sexual Abuse

The young people are out of school as a result of covid-19.  They are depressed, have fear of unknown and filled with anxiety, this is why there is increase of child abuse, rape, household violence against children in Nigeria, gender based violence are in increase in various communities in Nigeria as a result of Covid-19 pandemic.

In a speech made by Okeke Amarachi Sophia, she explained the strategies young people would use to prevent sexual abuse during this Covid-19 pandemic and thereafter.  We used the child abuse prevention programme, ‘’My body is my body’’ programme created by Chrissy to display five safety rules to avoid being abuse.

According to Okeke Amarachi,  she explained to young people that their bodies are very special and nobody have a right to touch their private parts because it belongs to them alone.

Do Not Keep Secret As Young People.

She told those young people that they should not keep secret but rather report any person that tries to abuse them to their safety network. Those safety networks are adult the child trust who will listen and believe whatever the children tell them. She explained the early warning signs they may feel if they feel worried or unsafe. They were advised to tell an adult on their safety network immediately. She advised young people to always call their private parts by their correct names.

Young people should create boundaries, nobody should touch their private part and they should never touch other person’s private parts even when they are asked to do so, again, they should never watch or view pictures of private parts. Young people were thought to SAY ‘’NO’’ if it does not feel right

They should never go on a ride with a stranger, never allow a baby sitter to touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable. She also thought the young people my body is my body song.  They sang along with her. At the end of the programme, young people were asked some questions which they answered. They were also given a room to ask questions based on what they were thought.

The programme witnessed a lot of dignitaries, parents, teachers, health workers, clergies and guardians. The young people showed their happiness. One of the participants, Eze Chioma Gloria said that the programme had impacted positively to her life because what she learnt will help her to prevent sexual abuse. Another child, Nwankwo Emenike Joshua said his hands are filled with the knowledge that will help him grow.

Furthermore, a parent, Dr. Mrs Ononikpo who was present in the programme said she had not seen such a programme in her life, that HSDF child abuse programme is fabulous. The archdeaconry of Awgu Aninri Diocese prayed a closing prayer on the event.
